722 tour - Mille Miglia 6-night tour
Monday 10th to Sunday 16th May 2021 (TBC)
The 'Mille Miglia' is one of the greatest classic car 'race' events in the world. Since it's reintroduction back in 1977 it has been a four day regularity race around Italy, starting and finishing in Brescia, taking in Rome and other historical Italian cities.
Why '722 tour', rather than '1000 Miglia holiday'?
'722' refers to the start time allocated to the great Stirling Moss, paired with 'navigator' Dennis Jenkinson, in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Moss and 'Jenks', driving a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, went on to set the fastest time on the event. Their time of 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds was never beaten - the event lasted only 2 more years before it was stopped as an all out race.
The Mille Miglia now runs as a 4-day 'retrospective' with competitive elements based around matching set finishing times which penalise drivers for being early so as to negate the need for excessive speeds! A handicapping system also allows cars from the 1930's to compete for overall honours against much later machinery. 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Zagato are frequently seen atop the podium, beating off the challenge from a wide selection of cars, including the fearsome Mercedes-Benz 300SLR - the Mercedes Benz factory museum cars often driven by 'celebrity' guests such as former F1 Driver David Coulthard, team boss Toto Woolf or his more successful wife Susie...
Whilst we could call our tour a Mille Miglia holiday, we feel that rather under-sells what we are offering. Our package includes hotels, most meals and the experiences shown that add up to much more than a luxury holiday.

Day One - Monday
Check in to our fantastic boutique hotel on the shores of Lake Iseo on Monday lunchtime and then join our private motor launches for a an early evening lake cruise* to a tour, drinks reception and welcome dinner at a fabulous lakeside venue.
Day Two - Tuesday
After a superb breakfast and a morning at your leisure we'll transfer you to Brescia town centre after lunch for the 'sealing ceremony' where you'll have time to relax, grab a cappuccino and catch your first glimpse of the classic cars heading through the town centre.
Take in the sights and sounds of Brescia and wander amongst the cars as they park up after the official ceremonies that bring to a close the ‘Scrutineering’ that happens in the central square. As the cars start to return to their pre-race overnight parking we'll get together for an evening at a traditional Italian restaurant in Brescia.
Day Three - Wednesday - start of the Mille Miglia
After breakfast, we set off to Fiera near the race start to soak up the atmosphere of the pre-race build up in the collecting area. As start time approaches we will take up position in Brescia town centre to see the cars pass by on leg one of their adventure. We have secured a prime viewing location and will enjoy a late lunch just a few metres away from the route as the 400+ classic cars pass by. In the early evening we depart to our next overnight stop close to Modena. Dinner tonight is at the hotel overlooking the stunning lake.
Day Four - Thursday***
As the race heads South to Rome, this morning we visit the world's finest private Maserati collection followed by free time for lunch and sightseeing in Enzo Ferrari’s home town, Modena. We then move on to a private tour of the Lamborghini factory and museum.
After today's excitement it's time to check-in to our exquisite boutique hotel in the centre of Parma's Piazza Duomo. The hotel is situated just a few metres from the Baptistery, one of the city’s most authentic symbols, encompassed in the charming setting of the historic city and within walking distance of elegant shops and boutiques. Parma is one of Italy’s most beautiful cities, a centre of gastronomic excellence and a long time patron of the arts and culture, surrounded by hills, ancient castles, nature reserves and protected parkland.
Day Five - Friday***
As the race heads back north from Rome we have one of the highlights of your trip, the chance to drive a Ferrari* in the streets of Maranello, followed by lunch in the legendary Cavallino restaurant. This afternoon we'll head to Ferrari's superb museum where you'll be guided around the exhibits. We then head off for dinner in a converted Italian farmhouse (did we mention, no diets?). As the evening descends into darkness you will have the chance to soak up the ambience and spend a couple of hours watching the cars arriving at their check in for the night in the town square
*Ferrari 'Test Drive' experience subject to license restrictions and insurance excess
Day Six - Saturday***
After breakfast at the hotel you have the choice to either spend the day exploring the historic centre of Parma or take our complimentary excursion to visit the Dallara Cars factory and museum*. (subject to confirmation of tour dates and Mille Miglia route planning, this excursion may change)
Dallara was founded by its current president, Giampaolo Dallara in 1972. After working for Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, and De Tomaso, Dallara wanted to continue pursuing his dream of working in the world of racecars. He established “Dallara Automobili da Competizione” in his hometown of Varano de Melegari, Parma.
Since its establishment, Dallara has become world renowned for its specialty in designing, manufacturing, and developing racecars. Every weekend, approximately 300 Dallara cars run on tracks around the world in various formulas. The company is present in all Formula 3 championships, and is the sole supplier of cars for IndyCar, Indy Lights, F2, F3, Super Formula and Renault Sport Trophy. Dallara also makes cars for the Formula E championship, WEC, ELMS and IMSA.
In recent years, the engineering activities have expanded, both for racecars and for high-performance road cars. Dallara provides consultancy services to some of the world’s most important international car companies including Alfa Romeo, Audi, Bugatti, Ferrari, KTM, Lamborghini, Maserati and many others.
After a relaxing afternoon of cars or retail therapy we all get back together one last time for our farewell dinner.
Day Seven - Sunday
After breakfast, we’ll wave guests on their way to their airport of their choice at the end of the Mille Miglia tour. We recommend arrange your flight for a Bologna departure to minimize the time spent 'on the road'.
*** The organisers of the Mille Miglia do not release full details of the route until just days before the event, just to keep us on our toes! Whilst all detailed tours/experiences will be included they may not necessarily be in the order shown, for logistical reasons.

What about flights?
Whilst we don't include flights, here's some advice on where to fly to for our Mille Miglia 6 night tour.
We advise guests to look at flights into Bergamo, Verona or Milan, with outbound flights from Bologna - this will minimise the time you spend in transfers to the start and from the end of our tour. Trans-Atlantic flights frequently depart very early in the morning from Milan which can prove to be a challenge for some guests with transfer times of between 2 and 3 hours.
Please contact us to discuss arrival and departure transfers.
Notes about the event
The final, detailed, route of the 2020 Mille Miglia has not yet been released. Until we receive the final route outline our final itinerary will not be confirmed.
We've been asked a number of times, so will suggest that you are physically able to walk about a mile at a reasonable pace. There are a number of locations that can be tricky to reach by coach, so some walking is required. 2017's tour included one gentleman recovering from a leg break, who found the distances fairly easy-going. Also be aware that you must be able to climb from a jetty into one of our boats (and out again) to take part in the lake cruise.
Our included accommodation
Our first three nights are in a stunning lakeside 'Hotel Rivalago' at Sulzano. On the shores of Lake Iseo, this hotel is about 30 minutes from the centre of Brescia and perfect for the start of our tour.
The second, and final, hotel is located close to the heart of Parma, which should give us a great opportunity to see the cars of the Mille Miglia on their last evening.
If you wish to drive to the tour, from the Monaco Historic GP for example, we can arrange parking for your car during our tour but note that there may be a charge for this.
Meals - what's included?
Dinner is included on each evening of the tour. In the main this will be at a traditional-style restaurant although a couple of meals will be in our hotels. Note that Wednesday evening will be a lighter 'supper' following the lunch provided for us in Brescia
A couple of lunches are included - in Brescia on Wednesday and at Maranello on Thursday. All other lunches are at the clients' discretion. You will find that you are generally spoilt for choice for something snack-like or fine dining!
We will be 'on site' throughout the event to ensure your needs are catered for throughout.

Have you considered extending your stay with a trip to the Monaco F1 weekend or Monaco Grand Prix Historique?
The Monaco Historic GP takes place on alternate years so the next opportunity to combine with the Mille Miglia will be 2020. The event normally precedes the Mille Miglia and can involve a quick dash from Monte Carlo to Brescia - it's about 5 hours by road.
F1 weekend is normally the week after the Mille so a slower transfer is possible, maybe visiting some other fascinating cities en-route, such as Venice, Florence, Pisa or Siena. Talk to us about some of the ideas we can recommend for your extended stay.
